Preparing Your CV

Here are our Top CV Tips:

  • Length: two or three pages is ideal – lawyers should include a matters/transactions list.
  • Layout: if you wish, open with a concise summary highlighting your skills and experience.
  • Employment: put your experience in reverse chronological order (latest role first), detailing your responsibilities.
  • Achievements: describe the contribution you personally brought to your employment under Employment. Metrics/outcomes can be useful to do this.
  • Education and Qualifications: be explicit about degree subjects, grades and awarding institutions, and list all professional qualifications/memberships. Details of any publications you’ve authored and/or public presentations you’ve made would also be helpful.
  • Contact Points: include your full postal address, email address, fixed and mobile telephone numbers.
  • Interests: include a brief summary of your interests outside work
  • Referees: include their name and contact details at the end of your cv

And try to avoid these common CV blunders:

  • Grammatical errors and typographical mistakes.
  • Using employer logos.
  • Mixing different text colours and fonts.
  • Poor layout, which is a major reason for CVs been dismissed by employers/recruiters, so keep it simple and readable
